Biography

Dr. Jan Pullen retired as Head of School in June of 2023 after a 20-year headship at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, Florida. Jan arrived at Saint Stephen’s in 1988 as the Lower School Director, a role she held for 15 years, along with being Associate Head of School for 6 years, prior to her appointment as Head of School. Dr. Pullen holds degrees from Florida State University (B.S.) and National Louis University (M.Ed.). In May 2013, she graduated with a doctorate (Ed.D.) in educational leadership and organization from the Mid-Career program (Cohort 9) at Penn GSE. In the Fall of 2019, she was asked to return to Penn to teach the School Finance and Leveraging Organizational Capacity course for the 3rd-year doctoral students in the Mid-Career program.

Dr. Pullen served as a member of the following educational boards:

  • Governing Board of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, serving on the Finance Committee
  • Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS)-second term, serving on the Finance Committee
  • Board of Directors of Global Outreach-Tanzania

In addition, for the past 13 years, Dr. Pullen and the Executive Director of FCIS have presented workshops for new heads, prospective heads, and board chair/heads discussing governance, finance, strategic planning, and accreditation standards.

Currently, Dr. Pullen continues her work with FCIS as an Advisor/Mentor/Coach to both Heads and Boards in independent schools in Florida. In her community, she serves on the boards for the Manatee Community Foundation and Art Center Manatee.
