Biography
Dr. Stephanie Shiffler is a licensed counseling psychologist and lecturer at Penn GSE. Dr. Shiffler earned her doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Georgia, working clinically with adjudicated adolescents, college students, and community members. She earned her master’s degree at the New School for Social Research with a concentration in the Treatment of Substance Use and Other Addictive Behaviors. She also belonged to the Trauma and Affective Psychophysiology Lab at that time, where she conducted research on complex PTSD and its impact on various domains of functioning.
Having previously served as an instructor at the undergraduate level teaching courses in counseling psychology, Dr. Shiffler now teaches in both the Professional Counseling and School and Mental Health Counseling programs at Penn GSE. She has nearly a decade of experience providing clinical supervision and conducting seminars and didactics with students at the master’s and doctoral levels.
Dr. Shiffler has worked extensively in the college counseling setting, providing individual and group therapy to university students. She is interested in improving approaches to the treatment of substance use disorder and supporting trainees as they build competence in this area. Outside of clinical work, she has developed and implemented outreach programming aimed at helping college students use harm reduction strategies to navigate their relationship to substances.
Dr. Shiffler’s research interests include identity development in clinical training and treatment reform for substance use disorder. In addition to her participation in teaching and training, Dr. Shiffler works with individuals and couples in private practice.
